East Side

A rich history, beautiful, leafy streets made for morning walks.

Welcome to East Side

Historic beauty and Ivy League academia in a classic Providence neighborhood
Perhaps best known as the iconic home to prestigious Brown University, Providence’s East Side is quiet, leafy, and graced with beautifully restored Federal mansions and quaint, creative houses painted the vivid shades of wildflowers. Opulent brick estates with imposing columns, marble steps, and custom fireplaces add to the grandeur of this historic neighborhood.
Legendary science fiction writer HP Lovecraft claimed Providence as his hometown and often wandered the East End’s picturesque streets waiting for the muse to visit his wild imagination. He frequented nearby Brown for both inspiration and the astounding library, from which he gleaned an understanding of the scientific musings so common in his work. Today, the East Side is fertile creative ground for artists at the nearby Rhode Island School of Design and writers and academics at the Ivy League Brown. With a rich history, beautiful, leafy streets made for morning walks, and creativity blossoming like spring flowers, the East Side provides a storybook setting for a dynamic life.

People & Lifestyle

The residents of Providence’s East Side are as artistic and impressive as the neighborhood itself. With Brown University and RISD anchoring the thriving artistic and intellectual communities, this vibrant enclave attracts brilliant minds and creative spirits. The easy drive to Boston means this well-educated group can access the finest art museums and cultural offerings in the state, and many residents are university professors or executives.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

The East Side’s culinary scene shines with the same creative flair as the artistic community, and the cuisine in this global town is as gorgeous as it is delicious. The Salted Slate, a warm, stylish bistro, showcases locally sourced meats, fresh seafood, a well-stocked bar, and a carefully curated menu of New American classics with an artistic twist.
The fresh, creative fare at India Restaurant has earned its reputation as the best Indian food in the city, and the vibrant Bollywood vibe makes dinner a one-of-a-kind experience. Travel next to Madrid European Bakery for a taste of Spain. The pastries are gourmet confections that melt in your mouth, and the hot chocolate is a velvet elixir sure to warm up the snowiest winter day. And if your confectionary cravings include classic milk and cookies, head straight to Feed the Cheeks for decadent treats fresh from the oven.

Things to Do

This historic, picturesque area sets the scene for leisurely strolls in the park and explorations into Providence’s storied past. East Side’s hidden gem, Lippitt Memorial Park spans six acres of grassy knolls and shady hideaways. Known as the gathering place for the community, this beautiful spot is home to both the Hope Street Market, a farmer-run cooperative offering the freshest local fruits and vegetables, flowers, cheese, gourmet bread and pastries, organic meats, seafood, poultry, eggs, and more, and the weekly Providence Artisans Market, which is run by the most dynamic artists in the city.
Known as the Jewel of the City for its dramatic elevated view of Downtown Providence, Prospect Terrace embodies Providence’s spirit of community – founded in 1869, the park’s land was given to the city by residents of the neighborhood. A peaceful green space, Paterson Park is an ideal spot for afternoons spent playing and exploring. The wooded areas provide shade and a cozy spot for children to feel adventurous, while the open grassy area is perfect for picnics and family time. The elegant Aldrich House, home to the Smithsonian-affiliated Rhode Island Historical Society, dates back to 1822 and is considered a National Historic Landmark. This impressive home provides a stunning setting for all of Providence’s most spectacular social events.

The East Side is known for outstanding academics, from college preparatory schools like the prestigious Moses Brown School, which teaches students in preschool through grade 12, to Ivy League Brown University and the world-renowned Rhode Island School of Design.
